Recommended Dry Food for Bull Terriers
  • Everybody is going to have their own opinions about which dog food is best suited for their dog or dogs. In truth there are quite a few really good foods available that contain all the right elements that make up a well balanced and nutritious meal for your dog. My dry dog food of choice for our adult Bull Terriers is "Blue Buffalo Wilderness" or "Taste of the Wild." I'm a firm believer that no matter what brand of dog food you utilize it should be one that's free of grain. Here's a link to many other recommended grain free dry dog foods - http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/best-dog-foods/best-grain-free-dog-foods/best-grain-free-dog-foods-dry/

For puppies my choice is Royal Canin. I've had really good luck with this food over the years with both puppies and expectant/nursing mothers.

  • I was thinking of getting the dog food from royal cannin for when i have a pregnant female, you think its good? I use Science Diet Ideal Balance, Ive never been fond of science diets dog food, but I got to try this food half off at my work and so I tried it since it was so cheap, I was amazed because Bowzer suffered from loose stool or diarrhea most of his life and it immediately stoped with this food, ellie was having frequent accidents in her cage and I have tried dozens of dog food over the years and I was truly shocked. It seems like my dogs go to the bathroom much much less frequent on this food where they used to need to go poop multiple times a day down to only once a day maybe twice a day for the younger dog. Its amazing stuff and I have no reason nor desire to switch haha.

  • Danielle,

Royal Canin makes a food specially designed for pregnant and nursing females. Yes, I think it's excellent. I currently have Cyra and Mokoa on it and they look great. Science Diet is a well balanced food but not at the level of Royal Canin. However, if your dogs are doing good with it and your happy with it that's all that matters.

  • Taste of the wild is one of the best
  • I have a question for bulliesofNC I was told that bull terriers need to be fed large breed puppy food and that's what iv been feeeding them but I'm tryn out the ones u were talking about just wanting to know if that was true or not
  • theres less fat in those foods usually, a regular puppy food will have more fat and probably be better.

  • O ok well I'm trying the royal canin for my pups that r 9 months and I saw a large breed but the weight on the bag started at 50 pounds and my pups only weight 40 pounds so I'm tryn the one for medium pups should I get the large breed and just feed them less or stick to the one I have
  • i would get medium puppy not large breed.

  • Ok thanks for the info
  • monero82 - Feed them as prescribed on the the back of the food package. Mark my words, you'll see great results with Royal Canin.

The weights they are talking about are for avaerage weight of an adult dog of the particular breed, not the weight of the particular puppy.

Due to the average weight of a EBT you could use either food. We just prefer utilizing the one mention in the above post.

  • The first 2 30lb. bags of Royal Canin Medium Puppy I purchased from Amazon.com.  It is shipped free in 2 days if you are a Prime member with no taxes charged.  It is $2 more at our local Petco, and of course, taxes are charged.
Just in case anyone was interested:)
  • My bullies are on taste of the wild Fish for my adult female and the High Prairie for my pup, does the Royal Canine contain any chicken? My female is allergic to chicken even just a minimal amount Will make her ears flare up.
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • Taste of the Wild is excellent for your Adults dogs and the Royal Canin is my choice for puppies. There's many different foods offered through Royal Canin some with chicken and some without. You'd have to check the ingredients for each. I would keep your adult on Taste of the Wild if she's doing good with it.

  • They both are their coats are shiny and health is great, my female was on blue buffalo fish and sweet potato and when I got my male blue didn't offer puppy food and since totw had started making puppy food I just switched them both and it was a little cheaper. Blue now makes puppy food but the price is nuts:@ so when my male starts on adult food in 5 months or so I was considering switching back to blue but if it ain't broke don't fix it right!!! I have just heard good thing about the royal canine also and was curious, thanks for the advice:)

  • Heads up guys I believe Taste of the wild is having a recall from what I hear and I cant seem to get yahoo homepage to work so check it out.
  • Thanks! I didn't even know they had a recall.

  • You welcome:)
  • Its more than just taste of the wild, its diamond pets foods, natural balance, premium edge and a few others. Apparently its not making the dogs sick, but people handling the food are getting sick.

  • Man taste of the wild is working good on my female her coat is really shiny and I even noticed her color is turning darker and it looks really nice I would hate to take her off of it but do yall know what the recall is and y its making the people sick
  • its contaminated with Salmonila and the people touching it are getting sick:( The company is offering money back in coupon or refund if you contact them. I'm considering switching back to Blue Buffalo:( mine also do well on this food.
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • I was reading up on it and they showed all the areas that have the bad food I'm in Texas and it didn't mention it so I'm kinda debating on switching plus it showed some numbers on the bag that can help u also but I put my food in containers so I can't check the bag that kinda has me worried
  • I also put mine in containers, call the company they will tell you to pitch it since you don't have the bag to check the numbers and issue you a coupon. I live in Michigan and my bullies have already ate half the bag:( I was not nice when I called:( the store I bought my food from knew nothing about the recall!!!! So theirs still probly bags of contaminated food on their shelves:(!!!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • Ok thanks ima have to do that cause I called the store I bought it from pet world and talked to the owner he told me that the warehouse he gets it from is not the warehouse that was contaminated he gets it from somewhere else and that only certain areas were contaminated but now I'm kinda wondering and I'm going to have to make that call u wouldn't happen the num to the company would u
  • It's too bad about this recall because it will really hurt the companies involved like Taste of the Wild and they are one of my my favorite foods of choice for my adult dogs. This will not cause me to switch dog foods. I'm looking forward to seeing Taste of the Wild back on the shelves!

  • I just googled it and clicked call on their website sorry:/ you will get to talk to a human though:)

  • if its not making the dogs sick i wouldnt switch either. wash your hands after handling pet foods because dogs can handle salmonella at a much higher rate than we can. salmonella is all over the ground and dogs always have there noses on the ground.

  • My dogs r still doing good on it so I think ima keep them on it unless anything happens but I was told that u can feed that same dog food to pups but I was kinda iffy about that
  • They do make puppy taste of the wild, the company did not recommend feeding adult food to a pup since the puppy food contains higher doses of protein and such for growth. however I took my male to a trainer that specializes in aggression and trains service dogs and she told me to take my now 9month old male off puppy food as he is already high energy and don't need the extras in the puppy food. I don't show or breed and he is soley a house dog, I would like to get him into an agility class sometime soon but she still said to feed adult. I am wondering about this as well, he does great on taste of the wild and it would be a shame for this to continue to happen I have my fingers crossed that it don't.

I have yet to try it because I'm thoroughly happy with the results I've had with Royal Canin puppy food. However, I'm sure it's really good.

  • Has anyone ever heard of Earth Born holistic dog food? They also have a grain free food.
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • Here in Michigan the pet stores have pulled all the Taste of the wild dog food off their shelves and I need food!!! I bought Blue Buffalo holistic lamb and brown rice to get me thru, however this is not grain free:( hopefully I can mix what I have left of the taste of the wild and not make them to sick...... Any advise?:(

  • The only "Grain Free" food that Blue Buffalo offers are in chicken flavor which you mentioned doesn't do good with your dog. Which product from Blue Buffalo were you using in the past that you said they were doing good with?

  • Cleo was on Blue fish and sweet potato until Brutus came along then I switched them to Taste of the wild because it was a bit cheaper and was grain free and they carried a puppy food. I had no idea their was so many grain free foods:@ thanks for the info:) it seems that every pet store carries different brands and has become a daunting task to.compare as everyone swears by different foods:/ so my question is this Steve, is grain free better than holistic for a Bull Terrier? I do plan to go back to taste of the wild but as of now I can't get any. They seem to offer the best variety and without chicken for a better price.
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • Since I can't get Taste of the Wild, I bought Blue Buffalo Wilderness Grain Free Salmon for my dogs.
  • I finally found taste of the wild for pups can't wait to c how it works on my new pup
  • I have my older BT on Orijen adult, and the change in his stool and coat has been amazing. I had him on the grain free Evo before this, but even then he had frequent bouts of loose stools and skin outbreaks. No more!
  • Really? That's one I've never tried but you have me interested just to see the difference. So far, I haven't found anything better than Taste of the Wild and Blue Buffalo. I'm going to have to look for this brand because I know they don't have it at the usual place I go for food. Hopefully it's available around here vice solely in Canada.

  • I feed my girl Orjein and she does great on it we started out on royal canine and she was horrible gassy, bloated and flaky coat. I switched to blue buffalo and raw she did better. Then talked to a trainer out here who fed orjein and we switched to that she said it is one of the best on the market and Nalas coat has never looked better she doesn't even have flakes anymore. I would recommend giving it a try.
  • I've heard good things about Orijen. It's not as widely available as Taste of the Wild or Blue Buffaloo. For now I'm pretty happy with the results I'm getting from their current diet. However, like I mentioned above, I not only provide them with a a good quality grain free dog food but I supplement with Nupro Gold and Grizzly oil. To date I haven't found a better combination that does so much for their energy level, health, and coat. Utilizing this diet along with raw meats has proven productive for my EBT's over the years.

Royal Canin is great for puppies along with Bil-Jac during the early stages. However, once the puppies are out of the puppy stages and ready to make a change to their diet outside puppy food I go with TOTW, or Blue Buffaloo. I can't contest to Orijen since I havn't used it but I do beleive it's a great food since many others have sworn by it.
