Our kids are six months, and until last week they loved the car. Here everything is a distance... 40 minutes to the beach, 30 minutes to the store... But suddenly, separately, they started getting car sick. She normally goes out with my wife, he with me, and we both realized that when we got on the highway they started whining, holding their heads in front of the air vent, diving for the footwell. Local roads, slow speeds, typically with the window open... No problem. But as soon as you pick up speed... Anyone have a clue why the sudden change, or any idea how to combat it... Obedience class is 45 minutes down the highway and they don't get there in the mood to learn!!!

I need some help and advise on ear extension. Our babies are 11 weeks old and their ears are only just showing signs of coming up.
We are concerned that this is a little late although, checking with the breeder, both mom & dad's ears came up early and without help.
I attach some pics of the slight ear rise we are getting... better with her than with him obviously. We had started them a week ago on some cottage cheese as we are told that the extra calcium helps. We are hesitant to tape them as they spend most of the day in fight club ... (nothing serious) , but I am almost certain the taping wouldn't last 15 minutes. We have heard that Breath-Rite strips and New-Skin "adhesive" work as well as the taping does, but are afraid that, if these come off, one of them could swallow these. We hate the idea of separating them at all because they are literally inseparable and cry if they are apart at all. (I couldn't imagine ever having one puppy again, they are so subdued and lonely when separated or brought up alone) How late can we wait and does anybody have any idea or experience of how we can help the situation.

Our girl we are going to need to spay, lest we end up with some redneck cousins. ( see previous string " Sir Hump-a-lot" ). I've read a bunch about when to spay and not, and there's such conflicting opinion. It seems so unnatural to spay before the first estorous, but a lot of "exspurts" recommend it. Then again it's hard to predict when the first estorous will occur and, once started, I believe you need to wait until a while afterward before spaying. Some real bully owner input please.

I am the foster mom of a 3 year old neutered male Bull Terrier mix. My foster, Nibbles, was surrendered to our rescue about a year and a half ago. Nibbles had been crated 24/7 most of his life due to eye issues. The rescue sent him to an eye specialist - the diagnosis was eye entropion and lens luxation in both eyes. Following surgery, Nibbles is completely blind in his right eye and has blurry long-distance vision in his left. He is blind within 16 inches of his face and now is taking medication for glaucoma - he is expected to lose his eyes within 3 years. In December, Nibbles experienced paralysis in his hindquarters and was diagnosed with fibrocartilaginous embolism of the L4 and L5 vertebrates - he is now 85% recovered. Nibbles gets along quite well using dog paths created by my personal dogs with whom he has good relationships. My question/s is/are this: does anyone have any experience with these conditions and can give me an idea what to anticipate - specifically in dealing with an ailing aging Bull Terrer? I am thinking of adopting Nibbles, but am concerned with the financial aspects of his deteriorating health.

Unfortunately skin problems and allergies are common problems amoungst the bull terrier breed. Yes, there are some significant skin disorders that can be associated with Bull Terriers. However (through my experience) 80% of the Bull Terriers I've come into contact with that had a skin disorder was found to be the result of an improper diet rich in grain. I've rescued several Bull Terriers that had bad skin issues where patches of fur were missing, no fur on the feet, excessive shedding, scabs and abrasions, etc which were often misdiagnosed for mange, mites, pyodermas, neurodermatitis, ringworm, hookworm, fleas, and hot spots.

Most often the cause of skin allergies within Bull Terriers is caused from poor diets consisting on a dog food with high amounts of grain. My biggest recommendation to anyone that has a canine with skin problems is to, first and foremost, concentrate on a proper diet free of grain. There are many grain free dogs on the market. I personally like to use Taste of the Wild. Here's a link to website which lists several grain free dog foods: Grain Free Dry Dog Foods.

Proper and professional tests can be conducted by a veterinarian to determine the cause of a canine skin disorder.

We seriously watch everything our kids eat, and for the very most part their stools are very consistent ... Every now and then they get a loose bout which lasts a day or so... I can't see it being anything we give them or they find around the house. So I can only put it down to deer poop... It's the only thing we catch them sampling on tours of the neighborhood .... (We have so many deer here it's a pain in the arse.... If anyone is brave enough to shoot deer in a residential neighborhood, please come on over for some easy pickin's ).... They shy away from virtually all other types of poop including their own thankfully...but they love them black M&Ms .... Does anyone have experience of those droppings providing the runs? And, more importantly, any idea how to deter Bullies from the habit.... ( I also mention duck poop because, while we only have wild ducks around here, I know that "tame" duck poop can also be a revolting attraction.)

So let me start out by saying that I lurk once in a while and I have spoke to some of you off this forum in the past.

I have a 4 month old that I plan taking on hikes and possibly my trail running buddy when he gets old enough. IMO at this time I think the Lyme vaccine isn't worth it because it only covers a couple of strains. I think the possible allergic reactions outweighs the actual benefit of what that vaccine (might) protect against.

My question is do you guys reccommend any preventatives? (advantix, revolution, frontline etc.) that you've used? I'm still in limbo. I do tons of homework on everything I do if I don't have a lot of knowledge on it. Maybe too much sometimes :) I pulled a tick off him a couple weeks back and it's had me looking a lot more into it. I know last year there were more ticks around than there had been in years. I dug out an quick article from a local paper a few towns away. I live in southern Massachusetts. http://tiverton.patch.com/articles/tiverton-tick-population-up-80-percent

-Steve

Good Morning,
I have a 4 month old Bull Terrier puppy whom, despite my tireless efforts, continues to chase and bite his tail unless I am right in his face playing with him. We acknowledge that sometimes when he gets excited, most often during the evening, he will "hucklebutt" around for a few moments, which in his case, does not involve any tail chasing or spinning. That part does not worry me too much.
What does concern me is the increasing amount of time he spends chasing, and when he catches it, chewing on his tail. I can tell when he gets that look in his eyes as he's about to start, and I will shout a firm "No" to him, which momentarily grasps his attention, but he then immediately resumes the behavior. I have tried diverting his attention with a plethora of toys, chews and affection. If I simply give him a toy, he acknowledges it, but goes right back to chasing. These things seem effective only if I am participating in the activity with him, but moments after I stop, he continues to chase. I feel bad for scolding him if this is something that he cannot control, although I feel that giving him a toy or affection to divert his attention is only rewarding him for chasing. Is that wrong?
Also, another problem with scolding him is that it only seems to increase his want to chase. He will simply walk further away from me and start up again. If I give him a swift smack on the behind, it's now "go time" where he will bite and attack me only stopping when that becomes a bore for him, to which he will then start chasing again.
I have also tried the "shaker" method (shaking rocks in a can), which just gets him overly excited. I have tried spraying him with a water bottle, again, seemingly only provoking him to jump and bite. Basically, anything aside from sitting down and playing with him just puts him into attack mode. And this method does not seem to be solving them problem.
He also continues this behavior once he is put in his crate. This seems to be the time when he is actually able to "catch" his tail by pinning it up against the interior of the crate. There is now a raw spot forming in the area where he is chewing.
I have talked with my vet about this and the only help offered has been a survey and saliva sample mail in package to a university performing a study on the behavior, which I'd be happy to participate in, but does nothing to aid in the prevention of his chasing. Or, to simply medicate him, which I am not a fan of, especially if this can be corrected in a more natural way.
If there is anything else anyone could suggest, I would be immensely grateful. I care so much for my little bullet head, terroristic behaviors and all! He is who is, and I don't want to change him, I just want to prevent the onset of any obsessive compulsive behaviors.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I sincerely appreciate in advance any advice offered! :)

With Maya arriving today I've been surfing along the web looking for some pertinent information on vaccinations. Specifically what's needed, what's not needed, and when they are to be administered if they are needed or required. Obviously there's a lot of info out there. So, in an effort to get the best information to make an informed decision. I figured I'd ask you experts. There are some sites that mention that combination vaccines that roll all the vaccinations into one are not the best for the puppy. Then there are others that say there are many vaccinations that are not needed and that annual "booster" shots are a waste of money and could affect the dog's health. We want the very best for Maya and any guidance you all can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Mark

Sometimes it may be necessary to tape the ears on a Bull Terrier puppy to ensure they stand correctly. Yes, 90% of the time they will stand on their own without any assistance. However, the process of taping their ears is a simple procedure and only ensures success. We recommend taping the ears any time after 8 weeks of age and when they are away from their siblings who would love the opportunity to bite at each others tape messing things up. :))
Here's a quick video Craig (Bullies of NC - Jacksonville, NC) made for a puppy owner who had a puppy with one ear that needed a little assistance by means of taping.

Is it common for a female puppy to be (by far) the largest puppy in the litter? Also, is there anything you can do to help the runt? Her belly is always full and I make sure she gets as much (or more) nursing than the others. Oh and mom is eating properly and often.
